Where Can I Fish?

Over the years, the Pirtek Fishing Challenge has strived to provide the best opportunities for competitors to fish their local area.

The Challenge provides state-based and non-state-based categories, and this can become a little confusing when boundaries overlap. So here is a summary of where you can fish in each state.

Just click on the name of the state in which you will be fishing on the day of the Challenge.

NSW / ACT

There are 12 species in total.

Five state species: Flathead, Bream, Whiting, Tailor and Luderick.

Plus, Australian Salmon and Redfin are included as part of the Open category.

You may also fish for freshwater species in the Murray-Darling Basin, Mountain Trout and East Coast Freshwater categories.

Murray-Darling Basin: Golden Perch, European Carp, Murray Cod. Murray Cod can only be targeted with artificial lures. Strictly no bait fishing allowed for Murray Cod.

Mountain Trout: Rainbow or Brown Trout.

East Coast Freshwater: Australian Bass.

Queensland

There are 11 species in total.

There are four state species: Whiting, Trevally (all species), Flathead, Barramundi (saltwater/freshwater)

Plus Barred Grunter/Javelin Fish and Redfin are included as part of the Open category.

You may also fish for freshwater species in the Murray-Darling Basin, Mountain Trout and East Coast Freshwater categories.

Murray-Darling Basin: Golden Perch, European Carp and Murray Cod. Murray Cod can only be targeted with artificial lures. Strictly no bait fishing allowed for Murray Cod.

Mountain Trout: Rainbow or Brown Trout.

East Coast Freshwater: Australian Bass.

Northern Territory

There are three species in total.

There are two state species: Barramundi (saltwater/freshwater) and Queenfish.

Plus, Barred Grunter/Javelin Fish is included as part of the Open category.

Tasmania

There are four target species in total.

One state species: Bream (all species).

Plus, Australian Salmon, and Redfin are included as part of the Open category, and Trout (Rainbow or Brown) in the Mountain Trout category.

South Australia

There are six species in total.

South Australia has been combined with southern Western Australia to form the SASWA (South Australia / South Western Australia) category.

State species are Whiting (all species) and Bream (Yellowfin, Black and Pikey), plus Australian Salmon and Redfin are included as part of the Open category.

You may also fish for the freshwater species Golden Perch and European Carp in the Murray-Darling Basin.

* – Due to state regulations Murray Cod is excluded for South Australian competitors.

Victoria

There are nine target species.

State species are Bream (all species) and Flathead, plus Australian Salmon and Redfin are included as part of the Open category.

You may also fish for freshwater species in the Murray-Darling Basin, Mountain Trout, Open, and East Coast Freshwater categories.

Western Australia

Western Australia is divided into two categories.

North from Kalbarri is the Top End category which includes two state species: Barramundi (fresh and saltwater), and Queenfish. You may also target Barred Grunter/Javelin Fish in the Open category.

South from Kalbarri is the Southern WA / SA category with two state species: Whiting (all species), Bream (Yellowfin, Black and Pikey). Plus, Southern WA can target Australian Salmon and Redfin as part of the Open category.
